Millions of people live with cerebral palsy, a lifelong condition that develops at an early age. Mac Keith Press and Gillette Children’s Healthcare Press recently released a new series of books on cerebral palsy. They provide detailed information about each of the three main subtypes of cerebral palsy and aim to both inform and empower families and adults living with cerebral palsy.
About Cerebral Palsy
Cerebral palsy, or CP, is a group of neurological symptoms and conditions that affect muscles and movement. It can cause a range of mobility issues that range from mild to severe. There are also many associated conditions and disabilities, like hearing or vision impairment, epilepsy, speech difficulties, and cognitive impairment.
Approximately one in 345 children in the U.S. develops cerebral palsy, often as a result of brain damage or malformation during fetal development or labor and delivery. Cerebral palsy is treatable, but there is no cure. It is a lifelong condition but is not progressive.
The Cerebral Palsy Book Series
Children diagnosed with cerebral palsy face lifelong symptoms, disabilities, and difficulties. CP is a complex group of conditions that varies significantly from one individual to the next. It is vital that families of children with CP learn as much about it as possible.
This is why Mac Keith Press and Gillette came together to create this new series of books about cerebral palsy. Part of the Gillette Children’s Healthcare Series, the new books include several important features:
- Detailed medical explanations of CP and the common subtypes
- Evidence-based and best-practice treatments
- Stories of real families living with cerebral palsy
- How CP is managed, not just in childhood, but across the lifespan
The books are ideal for but not limited to families of children with a CP diagnosis. Adults with cerebral palsy often have limited access to solid, evidence-based information about their condition. The books are also detailed enough to be valuable to healthcare professionals and students.
